Make a note of those you can’t find, as well as the type of appliances and the voltage; there are two types: 110V and 220V. Electrical outlets differ in many places, and although a universal adaptor for your computer and mobile phone are essential for travel, major appliances—even hair dryers—often won’t work effectively through them for long. Look Before You Leap! (2)

Before I moved, I visited Hong Kong three times for a combination of client-related business and pre-move trip. Business and personal matters were taken care of: I met my future team and made time to get a feel for the place. I went hunting for a flat and took pictures of various buildings, views, and floor plans; toured and wandered the streets day and night, snapping pictures everywhere. The sense of the place came through so that by the time the moving truck arrived, I was sure I could live there. Sharing the photos of the flats with my husband, who wasn’t able to join me on the trips, turned out well. Our little paradise was known as the Chinese Riviera; our thirteenth-floor view overlooked Dragon’s Back Mountain, which rose up dramatically from the crystal blue sea below. —Stacie, coauthor and consultant Continue reading »
