You feel strange, as if you don’t belong, because you are foreign. Many cultures just don’t let outsiders into the inner circle right away. The sense of distrust and suspicion on their parts, combined with your own sense of uncertainty, creates an uncomfortable atmosphere. It takes effort and energy to keep an open mind because it is so easy to slip into criticism of the local culture and make prejudicial comparisons with your own. Different does not equal bad. I took a few things that reminded me of my roots, such as an old stuffed animal and a baby blanket that my great-aunt made for me.
