The sense of distrust and suspicion on their parts, combined with your own sense of uncertainty, creates an uncomfortable atmosphere. It takes effort and energy to keep an open mind because it is so easy to slip into criticism of the local culture and make prejudicial comparisons with your own. Different does not equal bad.
