Gather as much information as you can from a variety of sources—the Web, newspapers, books, and articles recommended by HR and friends. If possible, talk to folks who have already worked in the region you’re going to. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which maintains a well-established network overseas, has terrific information for all foreign locations.

Don’t forget about the embassy in the country you’re considering. Once you’re posted, they offer citizens a host of services from security, safety, and medical updates to professional contacts. —Mary, FAA

Safety. What is the crime rate? Are the streets safe? Are there hate crimes or specific tensions among ethnic or religious groups? Are you any more likely to be a target because you are a woman, specifically a foreign woman? What do other women do to stay safe?

Religion. Is there a predominant religion? Is the country tolerant of your religion? Will you be able to practice your religion and feel comfortable doing so? Is there a house of worship that suits your needs?

We knew right from the get-go that Ed wouldn’t be able to work in either Switzerland or Belgium. He was OK with that, and after living with him for almost five years while he occupied himself with a combination of intellectual pursuits, various sports, and traveling, I’m pretty sure I know what he’ll be like when he retires—not a bad thing to learn about your husband early on! —Diane, DuPont
